Headlined “Binay hits P-Noy admin," today’s Philippine Daily Inquirer reports on VP Binay’s speech before the Lion’s Club during which he enumerated the problems of the country which are not being attended to by the administration.
“There is a power crisis, the rising prices of oil and other commodities, the rampant crimes plaguing the country, the hellish traffic jams, unsafe MRT and LRT, the recurrent flooding and the wrath of nature that we must all prepare for. But instead of giving all their time and thoughts to achieve solutions to these problems, they chose to advance their own interests by destroying my name and those of my loved ones.”
Except for the MRT and LRT issues, the problems listed have been at the forefront of every presidential elections since time immemorial, which every presidential candidate promised to solve, but which no president has ever solved. These problems are not unique to the Philippines, but common to the rest of the world. And, time and thoughts are actually being expended by local officials on these problems.
But there are two problems which have also been plaguing the country and which have remained unsolved despite efforts by government agencies and officials concerned: corruption and insufficient mass housing. These two problems are conspicuously excluded in the enumeration. It may not be argued that corruption in government is already covered by “rampant crimes” because corrupt acts may be so veiled with secrecy and legalese that the corrupt can always claims that he did not commit any crime and dare the accusers to file charges at the proper forum.
As the designated housing czar, mass housing for the poor is within his area of responsibility. With the exclusion of this problem from the list, would this mean that this has already been solved?
With respect to corruption in government, would the senate investigation on the Binays not fall within this problem? Would this also mean that corruption in government is no longer a problem? Jemarjo! Susmaryosep!
